6-into-4: direct 1970-to-early-1984 four-speed replacement transmission

One day in the past we came out with the 6-into-4 for Shovelheads as a favor to a friend. Low and behold, sales of these transmissions have been a complete shocker and the message is loud and clear:

People love their Shovelheads and they ride the piss out of them!

Our 6-into-4 transmission is a direct replacement for the 1970-E84 4-speed, available with or without the time-honored 1936-84 style kicker.

New for 2008, we have new mainshaft lengths that allow for Knuckle and Pan applications! People love these bikes too!

In a 4-speed, 4th gear is 1:1. Our 6-into-4 6-speed overdrive has a 1:1 5th gear and a .86 6th; good for a 500 RPM reduction in cruising RPM on the highway

Details:

  • Available in show polished, wrinkle black, or raw finishes
  • Choice of Hydraulic (extra cost) or conventional mechanical kicker cover
  • Kicker includes a polished brass pedal
  • Many optional gear ratios available (See the OD6 page)
  • Now available with 33 tooth pulley
  • For most 1936 to 1986 Applications only (mainshaft length varies depending on year/application)
  • Avaiable without primary mounting ear for cleaner looks on hardcore bikes
6 into 4 Installation Instructions s PDF: [Download]

INSTALLATION NOTICE: The transmission bolts directly into your stock frame and your stock inner primary bolts right up. Due to the extended length of the transmission on the kicker side the exhaust pipe, oil tank and electric starter mounting brackets may have to be modified. Some inner primary covers require modification to clear the main drive nut. Some electric starter installations require modification of the transmission case for clearance. There is no speedo cable provision in the tranny case, but you can relocate the speedo cable to the front wheel. Another option is to convert over to electronic speedometer. An electronic speed sensor provision is in the door and it accepts factory 1994-later style sensors.

BAKER Klassic Kicker Gears

Smoother and Stronger: We all know the struggle of that die-hard guy in the crowd determined to kick over his stubborn motor. This beautiful embodiment of man versus machine is pornographic in nature. Because starting that bike in a sea of onlookers is truly the money shot. With Harley kickers becoming increasingly difficult to find and Chinese knock-offs being the only thing available for 1936-86 kickers we took the initiative to develop a set of better kickers gears made in America, and manufactured with BAKER gear technology. Please install per OEM factory service manual.

  • For 1936-1986 Big Twin 4-Speed Transmission Assembly or similar
  • Hardened gear treatment to prevent common failure
  • 16-tooth starter gear
  • 24-tooth starter crank gear
  • Will work with the 14-tooth OEM H-D starter gear

n1 shift drum

Originally developed for drag racers, the N1 shift pattern (Neutral-1-2-3-4-5-6) was designed to prevent false neutrals between 1st and 2nd by positioning neutral under 1st. This drag racer trick also eliminates all room for error in finding neutral on a jockey shift bike. As you roll up to the stoplight you tap all the way down with your left hand and you are guaranteed neutral because it is the last stop on the shift pattern. Little Suzie notices your skill in negotiating your minimally equipped bobber to a seamless stop and decides to hop on and leave her boyfriend with hair on the bottom of his feet at the Tavern with his buddies who have real billy bob teeth. We don’t offer any products to help you from this point on.

4-speed n1 shift drum

The same benefits as the above drum set, with a N-1-2-3-4 pattern.
