Picture this. You dump the clutch and pull away from the stoplight. The poor sap running along side you pulls in the clutch to grab 2nd gear. You, on the other hand, keep the throttle WFO and stomp the shift lever to get 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th gear. Your left hand never touches the clutch lever and that poor sap in your rear view mirror becomes smaller and smaller. Ignition kill shift drum kits allow clutchless upshifts by using the neutral switch to kill the primary side of the ignition circuit and momentarily unload the drivetrain to upshift to the next gear. Kit includes drum, pillow blocks with roller detent, and ratchet pawl with
special mechanical overshift protection. For 5-speed left -side-drive (DD5) and our Right-Side-Drive 6-Speeds (RSD6).
The stock ratchet pawl used from 1980 to 2000 utilized a scissor spring that was well known for breaking. Each time an upshift or downshift is made the pawl spring is cycled. After many cycles, the spring leg breaks. The unfortunate side effect of this failure is the broken spring leg going through the transmission gears and destroying the transmission. Any seasoned tech has seen this one. Our new ratchet pawl utilizes a rectangular cross-section spring like the 21st century Big Twins. Other improvements include:
Lever ‘beak’ for overshift protection
Pawl shaft lever splines are hobbed on a gear cutter just like our gears for high strength
STANDARD IN ALL TRANSMISSIONS. Street racers with a gummy tire, big engine, and big payload can do it. Drag racers also make it happen. With big engines and big tires that hook up hard to the pavement, the stock 5th countershaft gear cracks in half under extreme conditions. This is due to the .150” cross section of the gear. With a case depth of .050” on the exterior, there is very little soft core left. Competition drag racers often anneal the 5th countershaft gear to make it softer; This makes it less prone to breakage in competition. The downfall is that spalling occurs on the gear teeth and the teeth physically wear out in short order. This combo shaft replaces the existing countershaft and 5th countershaft gear. Material is 8620, HRC58-62. This product is included at no-cost and is standard on every 5-speed builders kit or complete transmission except the DD6. It is available as a stand-alone purchase only for our DD5’s.
This bitch is built for muscle! The Torquebox is designed for heavy-duty, high-horsepower applications! It features a huge 3" center distance between the mainshafts make the gears the biggest, strongest, baddest in the industry. It's been designed from the ground-up with a list of features that improves most every component on a transmission.
