RSD: Right Side Drive

We introduced RSD (Right Side Drive) in 2001 when the 240 tires came out as a solution to balance big tire customs, and it accomplished just that. More than ever with the popular 300+ tires and the radical 360’s in circulation, RSD translates to zero offset and a perfectly balanced radical custom.  The convention of offsetting the transmission to the left to get the secondary drive around the tire puts the entire motorcycle out of balance and adversely effects handling.  We are able to offer a Right Side Drive transmission in all of the available big twin platforms, Softail, Softail based customs, Dyna’s, FXR’s and FL Touring models. This versatility of case offerings maintains all of the clutch and primary options that are available for the standard LSD (Left Side Drive) configuration. 530 Chain or Belt secondary drive, no problem. Mechanical or Hydraulic Clutch lever assemblies, we got that covered too. Multiple gear ratios offered for your drivetrain tuning needs too.

– Available as a complete transmission or builders kit on 5 speed versions

– 6 Speed units only available as a complete build transmission

– Mutiple gear ratio combinations available (both 5 and 6 speed versions)

– Full complement of straight cut gears for the ultimate in strength, with the tooth forms ground with diamond coated tooling

– Available versions Softail, Softail based customs, Dyna’s, FXR’s and FL Touring models

– Works with all primary and clutch configurations on the market

– Comes standard with zero offset pulleys and 530 chain sprockets, with many offset pulleys available at a nominal up-charge

– Pulley covers sold separately

– Keeps the motorcycle fully balanced by not needing any drivetrain offsets, strictly a bolt in design on all versions

– Backed by a 5yr limited warranty

Bearing Door

We offer 3 types of bearing doors, as shown below. The differences in doors are the profiles and the removable ear on the Dyna version to allow access to the stock swingarm pivot shaft. The FL version is longer to accommodate the stock engine oil spout and dipstick feature. We use a 1 piece billet dipstick for packaging reasons. With the last option, and most popular, being the Softail door. All of the function and precise geometry you expect, no extra beef to clutter your bike. All of our RSD doors are machined from 6061-T6 billet stock to exact standards, then polished or chromed depending on the model.

Redundant Neutral System

Shift System

Our 6 Speed shift system with roller detent guarantees smooth shifts every time and our redundant neutral ensures that finding neutral is a easy chore. We mount a plunger detent on the left side pillow block and cut a plunger track into the shift drum itself. The plunger follows this track during operation (shifting) and when shifting into neutral pops into a pocket. This system lets you feel that you’re shifting into neutral. No more guessing. Shift drum features more aggressive timing on the fork groove profiles and is case hardened to 58 Rockwell for wear resistance and crisp shifts. We built our reputation on smooth shifting 6-speed transmissions; our drum designs benefit from the engineering lessons learned.

Gearset

All RSD5 (Right Side Drive 5 Speed) and OD6R  (Overdrive 6 Speed, Right Side Drive) gearsets are made out of 8620 steel, with the gears being shaper cut before heat treat then precision ground with diamond coated tooling after heat treat (58-62 Rockwell ‘C’). This extra steps ensures not only a quieter gear pair, but enables much tighter backlash control. The gearset is all spur gears to handle all the power being thrown at them. The dog teeth are backcut at a 4° angle to optimize the engagement of each shift when the power is applied.

The mainshaft is unique with 1st main gear being incorporated as part of the shaft, the countershaft also features a unique 1-piece design with 5th gear.

Shift Forks

Our investment cast shift forks are made out of 4140 then dipped in a hard chrome plate bath for wear resistance, also designed with oil reliefs to ensure proper lubrication and wear resistance on fork blades and shift dogs.

FERRULE STYLE CLUTCH CABLE TECH TIP:

This tip applies to F5R, F6R, F5K, F6K, RSD and Big Dog style clutch cable installations that utilize a split ferrule for cable retention. It is recommended that the inner cable, ferrule and ball ramps are coated liberally with wheel bearing grease upon final installation. This step has been omitted for photo clarity.

After attaching the clutch cable to the clutch lever, be sure that the cable adjuster is fully collapsed. Screw the cable into the sidecover. Slide the ball ramp over the exposed inner cable, then the split ferrule over the inner cable end. Rotate the ball ramp fully rearward removing all of the slack from the inner cable and engaging the ferrule into the ball ramp. Install a miniature nylon cable tie on the inner wire directly in FRONT of the ball ramp as far back as possible. Snip the excess tie as short as possible. This will prevent the ferrule from accidently becoming dislodged during installation and/or clutch adjustment.

Recommended Fluid / Level

Picking the right transmission fluid ensures the life and durability of your transmission, that’s why BAKER recommends a fully synthetic GL-5 rated gear weight oil of 75W-140. If a GL-5 rated gear lube is not available, these commonly carried viscosities (weights) will work 75W-90, 75W-140 and 85W-140. BAKER does not recommend the use of Syn3 (20W-50).
