Armored Attitude Adjuster

Stronger than the original for those with more abusive inclinations!

The BAKER Armored Attitude Adjuster is an insurance policy for your motorcycle in the form of a manual chain tensioner that allows you to set the chain to the proper slack when cold. Be assured that the adjustment will not change, saving you money on costly repairs in the future.

With the stock auto chain tensioner used in 2006 and later Dynas as well as 2007 and later Softail and Touring bikes the primary chain tends to tighten over time. When cold, the center distance between the output of the engine and the input of the transmission is short, putting slack in the chain. The auto tensioner incrementally ratchets up, tightening the chain to compensate. This happens repeatedly. As your bike warms up, the center distance increases, and your chain becomes too tight. A chain that is too tight puts harsh loads on your motor case bearings, inner primary bearings, clutch hub bearings and transmission output gear bearings. If left unaddressed, you’ll end up paying thousands for repairs to your engine and transmission.

Our Armored Attitude Adjuster allows you to set the chain to the proper 5/8”-7/8” (cold) freeplay without the chance of overtightening so you can ride worry free!

  • Chain shoe machined from Nylon 66
  • Active Plate and Back Support Plate investment cast with 4130 steel
  • 28% finer teeth spacing (compared to 2001-06 chain adjusters) for more accurate adjustments
  • Chain adjustment method same as 2001-06 style stock ‘L’Bracket’ adjusters.

Benefits

  • Increases torque by 3.42 ft/lbs
  • Reduces primary noise
  • Helps prevent damage to the primary
  • Improves motor bottom end and inner primary race bearing durability

  • 2007-2017 Softail Models
  • 2007-Later Touring Models

The Armored Attitude Adjuster is an excellent solution for any non-racing application.

The Attitude Chain Adjuster solves the issues associated with the stock auto chain tensioner on 2006-Later Dyna & 2007-Later Softail/ Touring models. The first moment the chain has enough slack into it to ratchet the shoe up another notch, and thus tightening the chain, it will. One notch tighter  might not be an issue, but you don’t have any control of when this mechanism stops tightening the chain. The end result in many cases is the primary chain is so tight that it will start wearing out left side motor case bearings, inner primary bearings, clutch hub bearings and transmission output gear bearings.  Our manual chain tensioner allows you to adjust the chain to the proper 5/8-7/8″ (cold) freeplay, and never have to worry about the chain getting too tight. We offer this chain adjuster for fitment with stock outer primary covers.

Note: Check the primary chain tension at the 500-mile interval and then after every 5000 miles.  If the chain cannot be adjusted properly, then replace the chain.

        Poor Design Poor Quality

I installed this adjuster in my 2009 FXSTB, mildly modified, 105HP/110TQ. The bracket holding the shoe actually bent causing the shoe to tip outwards. Also, the “armour” bracket buckled and fractured. I used this adjuster along with the Baker compensator for approximately 5000 miles and all of it is now trash.

        • What model motorcycle do you ride? 2019 Harley Road King Special

Replaced OEM Primary Chain Adjuster With Baker Attitude Adjuster

I recently purchased and installed the Baker Attitude Adjuster on my 2019 Harley Road King Special. The bike only has ~7,000 miles, so the change out of the primary chain tensioner was to preserve the mechanical integrity of the compensator, crankshaft/bearing, and clutch basket bearing. I noticed during the last 1,000 miles the shifting into the lower gears was a little difficult, and particularly shifting from neutral to first after a cold start - get the custom Harley “banging” sound. In preparation to replace the primary tensioner, after removing the primary case I measured the chain slack in several spots; consistent 1/4” - way too tight!! The installation of the Baker tensioner was very easy! The chain slack ranged from 5/8” to 3/4” in several spots. Also, I added HD 80W-140 gear oil vs Formula + Primary oil for additional lubrication capability. During the break-in of the new tensioner, I must say the gear shifting from 1st to 4th is about the same. The gear shifting from 6th to 1st results in a much smoother synchronization with the motor and clutch. Only slight concern is the primary is a bit louder with the Baker vs OEM auto tensioner. I’m going ride the bike for next 1,000 miles and see if the noise reduces in the primary. If the noise doesn’t reduce, most likely the chain needs tightening a little bit. Overall, I’m pretty satisfied with the purchase of the Baker tensioner!

        REPLACING OEM JUNK

As part of the process of building high performance H-D motors in my shop….. all primary drives are thoroughly inspected and upgraded as required no matter the mileage of any bike. I recently rebuilt a 2015 Bagger using all S&S components due to their high quality and reliability + being MADE IN USA….. same as with all parts I purchase from Baker Drivetrain…… because MADE IN USA means everything to me!!! Upon removal of this particular bike’s outer primary cover I could instantly see that the primary chain was BANJO STRING TIGHT due to the JUNK OEM auto primary chain adjuster ratcheting itself into that position. I instantly ordered Baker’s manual chain adjuster to permanently correct this problem. This adjuster (although fairly expensive at $300) is extremely well designed…… is very high quality….. is a straight forward install….. completely resolves the overtightening chain issue….. and is MADE IN USA by REAL AMERICANS that build the absolute best H-D drivetrain parts in the world !!! High quality, super dependable parts are expensive…… but given what these parts can SAVE a person over many years….. are very much worth their price tag…… guaranteed. Plus I love doing business with a “mad scientist” like Bert Baker for many reasons….. and know that he stands behind his products 100 percent + strives to do all he can to take excellent care of his customers.
